In a year and a half we will join Troop 717 from Fort Mitchell in Northern Kentucky for a fabulous backpacking trip at Philmont, the BSA’s premier high-adventure base.
The trip will challenge Scouts physically and mentally during an 11-day trek thru the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. Each trek includes staffed camps with programs such as rock climbing, blacksmithing, black powder shooting, gold mining, etc.
Scouts must be First Class and age 14 on 1/1/11, or be age 13 on that date and have completed the 8th grade by the time of the trek. Philmont imposes weight restrictions that must be followed.
Although a solid price is not possible at this time, it will be in the ballpark of $1400 each, including transportation by bus and train, and the all-inclusive $725 Philmont camping fee. We have slots available for 14 Scouts and 3 adults to go. Some of these will be in a crew from Troop 717, and some will be in an all-Troop 281 crew. There may be more slots open in the future, depending on factors from Troop 717.
To hold a slot, be the first to get $50 to Dr. Reynolds. Another $50 will be due May 1st. To keep to Philmont’s payment timeline, $150 will be due on both July 15 and September 15. Scholarships are available, and there will be plenty of opportunity to earn Scout account dollars for the trip.
